UTICA OBSERVER DISPATCH Thursday, September 5, 2019: LETTERS TO THE EDITOR by Daniel G. Jadlowski, Whitesboro, NY
Make it a point to study Polish heritage. October is National Polish American Heritage Month where Utica, NY will honor Polish Americans with the annual flag raising to be held at city hall at noon on Friday, Sept. 27, 2019
All are welcome to attend the ceremony and are invited to a complimentary brunch to be held at the Polish Community Club, 301 Columbia St., following the event.
On Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. the annual wreath laying will be held at the Parkway and Oneida Street statue to honor the Polish revolutionary war hero General Casimir Pulaski. The general was recruited by George Washington and is the originator of the American cavalry. General Pulaski was killed at the battle of Savannah for the cause of American freedom.
During the month make an effort to review the contributions of Polish Americans and pass the knowledge on to younger generations. Consider the contributions of Matt Urban, Medal of Honor recipient and most decorated soldier of World War II; Marie Sklodowska Curie, a Polish physicist who discovered radium and a ‘two -time winner of the Nobel prize in science, or Nikolaus Copernicus, noted astrologer who formulated the theory that the earth orbited the sun.
Take some time this month to visit the Polish Cultural Center (at the Polish Community Center), read a book on Polish history or research your Polish roots on the web. Whatever you decide, enjoy your activity and pass our heritage on to the younger generations.
Thank you Dan for making the community mindful of Polish Heritage Month. You do a great job every year.
